Fad Diets: Why They Don’t Work Long-Term

Americans spend nearly 60 billion dollars per year in pursuit of smaller waistlines and healthy body weights. In this pursuit, individuals encounter the next-best “diet” fad – from flashy products and services to strict macronutrient restrictions, and even complete elimination of food groups. With so many options, it’s easy to understand why many Americans are struggling to know what to consume. Soon, another diet will soon sweep the mainstream and garner attention, further adding to the overwhelming myriad of fads.

The problem is, 95% of diets fail and most individuals will regain their lost weight in 1-5 years. This leads to an unhealthy cycle of fad diet after fad diet, further contributing to confusion and unhealthy eating habits. What these trendy diets don’t tell you is that healthy eating doesn’t have to be difficult or confusing – it’s much simpler than you may think.

To properly nourish your body, all you need is to consume balanced portions of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. These three nutrients, called macronutrients, fuel the human body and serve as the body’s form of energy. A simple way to measure these nutrients is the hand-and-fist method. When making meals, your protein should be the size of your palm, and carbohydrates the size of your fist. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re active! A great rule of thumb is to consume half your body weight in ounces daily. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, aim to drink 75 ounces of water every day.

In addition to what nutrients you eat, it’s also important to pay attention to the quality of these nutrients. Skip the processed, packaged, and chemically-laden foods often found in the center of the grocery store. Instead, shop the perimeter of the grocery store, where you’ll find fresh produce, lean meats, and healthy nuts and seeds.

At Farrell’s, we teach members how to eat healthy to nourish the body. We follow the hand-and-fist method and break down the macronutrient numbers for each member based on body composition to ensure the body is properly fueled to burn fat. Today’s trendiest “diet” will be forgotten by next season, but a colorful plate balanced with lean proteins, good carbs, and small portions of healthy fats will stand the test of time.
